We are proud of our diverse teams within the Travis Perkins Group
For us, diversity and inclusion is not just a box to tick. We’re on a mission to ensure our colleagues feel comfortable working in a secure, safe and truly inclusive place.
We spoke to some of our colleagues at our Keyline Stoke branch who identify either as members or allies of a diverse community, and they shone a light on why we are a great place to work. We appreciate we’ve still got work to do, but we’re investing in our colleagues to really drive change, encouraging them to be their whole selves and supporting them if they’re not. Read more to hear our colleagues’ stories.
Amy Elise Millar
Amy is an Assistant Branch Manager and has been with Keyline for just over two months, but with the Travis Perkins Group for nearly eight years.
‘The Branch Manager and I had crossed paths during our time with Travis Perkins, so when she called and explained there was a position available, I snatched up the opportunity. Keyline for me, always seemed like a beast compared to general merchants. I cherish the career I have built in the Group, and it was a no brainer to work for such a large Keyline.’
When asked what her favourite part of working in the Keyline Stoke team was, Amy also said the welcoming and accepting nature of the team. ‘As soon as I came through the door, it has been non-stop hard work, dedication, laughs and fun’.
Amy told us that she identifies as Q+ because to her, sexuality is fluid and after research, she realised that she doesn’t conform to the heteronormative ideal. She is, of course, also an ally of the community.
‘We have a “speak up, speak out” policy here at Stoke. We discuss difficult and important topics such as mental health, sexuality, and race. Keyline is definitely ahead of the game when it comes to having conversations around health and wellbeing. Seeing our Managing Director, Dean Pinner talk about his own challenges was really inspiring and seeing our leaders be at the forefront of these conversations will only further support us in branches.’
Paul Newman
Paul has been at Keyline for almost three years and worked with the Group for five years. His son is also joining Keyline because he sees how happy Paul is and wants to be part of the Keyline family.
‘I love my job here at Keyline and despite various offers I have had, I would never leave as I look forward to coming to work, which makes the day easier as I am in a positive frame of mind to start the day. I even miss it on my days off.’
Paul considers himself an ally of the LGBTQ+ community, as it’s very close to his heart. ‘I have co-workers and family members who identify as LGBTQ+, they are still human no matter who they love.’
As a Customer Sales Expert, Paul says he gets a buzz out of winning large bulk orders and interacting with suppliers and customers. His advice to those thinking of joining is that it can be a hard but rewarding career as you go home knowing you have done your best and really pushed yourself to make yourself better.
Andrew Hall
Andrew, pictured, is a Yard Supervisor and has been with Keyline for almost three years. He notes our welcoming approach to new members and great opportunities to progress as reasons for joining and staying. He also identifies with the LGBTQ+ community.
Andrew says his favourite part of working in the Keyline Stoke team was when the new Branch Manager started.
‘She has genuine care for the staff at the branch and makes every day enjoyable and has put the branch in a better position for the future. We are a team that takes time to listen to each other and feel comfortable enough to speak out.’
Ian Franklyn
Ian is a Customer Sales Expert and has been with the Group for 22 years. He has enjoyed progressing through the ranks from a yardman to counter sales and says his favourite part of working in the Keyline Stoke team has been colleagues, teamwork and working hard but still having banter.
Ian identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and says as allies within a diverse workplace ‘we all help each other; nothing is too much trouble.’
We asked him what his advice to those looking to join Travis Perkins would be.
‘It's a good company to work for. With loads of benefits, a good career and you can progress if you want.’
Alan Shufflebotham
Alan is a HGV Driver and has been with the Group for 21 years. He says that he felt peace of mind with this career move, knowing a large company like Keyline give job security, learning opportunities, investment in people and other benefits, allowing staff to thrive.
‘My favourite part of working in the Stoke team has been the responsibility of driving for Keyline, it gives me great job satisfaction when I’m providing a great service for a great branch. The company looks after you as an individual rather than a number, which is what has kept me here over the years. Well done to everyone who has helped take the group this far.’
Alan is an ally of the LGBTQ+ community and supports colleagues by being open-minded and embracing people’s individuality.
Greg Woodcock
Greg is a Transport Manager and has been with Keyline for two and a half years, joining in search of a career with a chance to progress, rather than a job. He says Keyline gave him this opportunity and he’s loved every minute of it.
‘I've enjoyed all my time at Keyline but even more so since the arrival of our new manager, the workplace is thriving and is such an enjoyable place to work. The opportunity to keep climbing the ladder has kept me in the group, I've gone from a Yard Assistant to Transport Manager in a short time.’
Greg is a strong and proud ally of the LGBTQ+ community and says his colleagues and customers all bring something different to each day.
‘We have open and frank discussions about our individuality and are openly encouraged to bring our whole selves to work; it's liberating to be part of such a diverse group of people, I honestly love coming to work! I'm so proud to be part of a successful and inclusive team, every day is something new and I have so much opportunity ahead of me!’
Justin Sure
Justin, pictured, is a Yard Assistant and has been with Keyline for one month. He joined us as he saw a lot of potential and opportunities within the company and his favourite part has been learning something new and enjoying working.
Justin identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and says that ‘having a great manager that makes you feel comfortable, supports you and wants to see you better yourself within the company is what's important. We have great communication within the team, and everyone is very easy to speak to.’
For those thinking of making a move into our industry, Justin says people should go for it as there are a lot of roles to progress in. ‘I see great things here for my future and I enjoy the work ethic.’
Reece Gilbert
Reece is a Management Trainee and has been with Keyline for less than a year. He decided to join the team to start a career with progression and very quickly knew it was the right move for him.
Reece says his favourite part of working at Keyline Stoke is working with the team. Everyone gets along and has a good laugh; they are all supportive of each other and push each other to get the best results.
Reece has found that everyone in the team supports and motivates each other and would advise anyone thinking of moving into the industry to do it at Keyline because there are so many options and opportunities with the company.
‘I started as a temporary yard staff and very quickly made my way up to apprentice management with the help of my manager. I enjoy doing the work and thrive working within a driven and dynamic team; I know that I can progress forward and one day I aspire to have my own branch.’
