Kirti started working at BSS, a business within the Travis Perkins Group three years ago, before the pandemic started. She says she needed a change from her role at the time, and wanted to try something new in an entirely different industry. Career changes have become increasingly common, and many of our employees join us from out of sector, with little or no previous experience, sometimes starting with an Apprenticeship. Here’s Kirti’s story about her journey with us:
‘I applied to BSS and it has been a very positive journey, despite the challenges of working through a pandemic.’
Kirti works as an Internal Branch Sales Assistant at BSS in Sheffield, which involves a lot of face to face interactions and close contact with customers. ‘A typical day for me would see me serving customers on the trade counter, picking customer orders ready for collection. As much of our customer communication is via phone & email, I am often online dealing with customer requests for product quotes, availability or stock and follow-up orders with suppliers and NDCs to ensure we replenish as needed.’
Working for our customers is one of our core values, and we encourage all our employees to build strong relationships with them. Kim, for example, previously worked at the same retailer for around 15 years, but never had the chance to speak with customers. Now, she’s able to build relationships with customers, which has helped her step outside of her comfort zone and develop her role. We want to help our people develop the skills they need to follow their chosen career path.
‘No two days are the same.’
When we asked Kirti what the best part of her job is, she said that although core tasks are defined in the role, no two days are the same. ‘I love this about my job. Every task that we do requires a different approach. I also love the face to face interaction with customers. Building a rapport with them, getting to know them better, really helps develop my selling skills and offer a better service.’
Kirti says that her working background was not in our industry but her work style has been very much “learn and apply”. ‘In this role you need to learn a lot about products and their applications to sell effectively, but the information I need is readily available and I can learn at my own pace.’ This is great information to keep in mind for anyone coming from out of sector!
