Teamwork and camaraderie make our distribution centres a great place to work
Did you read our recent blog about what it’s like to work in a distribution centre? The team gave us some great insights about what they enjoy, the challenges they might face in the role, and what the culture is like.
We wanted to delve a little deeper into why our distribution centres are a great place to work, and Sheila, a Distribution Shift Manager, gave us the lowdown on her experience, and how our distribution centres have progressed to be more inclusive and less male-dominated.
Natural career progression
Sheila has worked in several different roles within our distribution centre, as a picker, team leader, supervisor, front-line manager and section leader, so applying for the role of Shift Manager felt like a natural progression.
“After about 8 years of being a picking colleague, I wanted to progress so I put myself forward for a Team Leader position. From there after about 3 months in that role, I was promoted to Supervisor and then Section Leader. I then applied for my current role, where there is plenty of growth, but I hope to progress again in the near future.”
Every day is different
For Sheila, the most enjoyable part of her job is interacting with people and trying to help them achieve their goals, just as she has been helped in the past.
“Day to day I look after the smooth running of the PM Shift. I’m responsible for the Health and Safety of the team and make sure they follow good working practices. I handle the teams, and any absences due to sickness, annual leave, and performance all the while encouraging, training and coaching so that colleagues can enhance their skills and progress.
I enjoy working together with my fellow Shift Leaders to get the job done in a safe and efficient manner. Every day is different and full of different challenges.”
Shifting to a less male-dominated environment
Although warehouses have historically been male-dominated environments and in the past, at times Sheila has been the only woman on shift, she says that now it is so much more diverse and has changed so much over the years.
“I’ve stayed working at Travis Perkins most certainly because of the people, the teamwork and the diverse range of shifts and jobs that I have had within the warehouse. It has kept my job interesting for over 15 years. The warehouse has really changed with the times and has become a really diverse and inclusive place to work. I have enjoyed driving change on-site and will continue to do so.
Everyone has an important role to play on the shift and teamwork and camaraderie are what make our warehouse a great place to work. There is a genuine family-like atmosphere.”
A happy workplace is a productive workplace
Sheila finished by saying a happy workplace is a productive workplace and that ultimately she’s very happy in her role - what a statement!
If you’ve been inspired by Sheila’s career story, and you’re looking for a new opportunity to join a welcoming and diverse team, a job in our distribution centre might be for you.
