Holley is an Apprentice Tool Hire Manager at our Travis Perkins branch in Beccles. She's been with us for around 4 months after joining us from the care sector, with no previous construction industry or builders merchants experience. She said she liked the idea of trying something new and challenging, and so far is loving it.
Here’s Holley’s story about making a career move from the care sector by starting with a Tool Hire Manager Apprenticeship at Travis Perkins
Why did you decide to apply for your current role?
‘I was looking for another job after working in the care sector. I found this Apprenticeship on Facebook jobs and thought it would be something I would enjoy. Now that I’m in the role, I most enjoy working the counter servicing the customers and delivering out to the sites.’
Many of our colleagues have joined us from out of the sector with no previous building industry or trade experience. Apprenticeships are a great way to make a career change. Charlotte, for example, also joined us from the care sector and said that the initial thought of starting something new was daunting. However, by working hard and enjoying our support, she’s since bagged herself the ‘2021 Apprentice of the Year’ at the Hire Awards of Excellence.
Tell us about your Apprenticeship
‘I am currently doing the Tool Hire Manager Apprenticeship. This involves learning how the Tool Hire side of the business runs and works, such as doing on hires and off hires, pricing up tools for customers, calling them to see how they are finding the tools and generally checking in.
I have learnt a lot while working on the desk, including transferring contracts to other branches. I’m also learning to service, clean and repair the kit. Another part of my role is doing the deliveries and collections which entails me going out in the truck on my own and dropping off or picking up equipment. I am really starting to see every part of the tool hire department and I think it's just great!’
Have you got any advice for someone thinking of joining Travis Perkins?
‘I would encourage anyone who is thinking of joining the business to go for it. I have visited other branches whilst doing my training to see how they work and what they do differently from our branch. Everyone has been so welcoming and made me feel very at home, just like my own team does, so it’s definitely a great culture. I definitely think this is the best career move I have ever made.’
