Balancing a part-time job with a Law degree plus competitive boxing. Read Oli’s impressive story

Oli is a part time Talent Operations Administrator in our Talent Acquisition team, supporting all areas of our business. He’s been in his current role for two months but has been working for the Group for around nine after joining us on the Kickstart Scheme, a Government-funded initiative to help create jobs for 16 to 24-year-olds like Oli and Thomas who are on Universal Credit.

Hybrid ways of working have truly enabled us to be a flexible employer and enables colleagues like Oli to thrive. Whilst studying for a Law degree, Oli is working 20 hours a week with us remotely from Glasgow and is also currently competing to join the Boxing Scotland Team and represent the country at the next Commonwealth Games. We spoke to him about what his role entails and how he’s found working for the Travis Perkins Group.

What made you decide to apply for your current role?

‘I originally applied for a job within the Travis Perkins Group as part of a government-run scheme known as ‘Kickstart’, initially for six months of work experience. When this came to an end, my current position was mentioned and it sparked an interest because I had acquired skills that I thought would be really valuable in the role.’

What does your role involve on a day-to-day basis?

‘I am part of the Talent Operations team who are responsible for our talent systems, processes and attraction including the careers site and social media. I am currently based in Glasgow and work remotely from home with a company-provided laptop and phone.

My job consists of many various aspects, but currently, I am working on getting in contact with different agencies that Travis Perkins has worked with, to extract information that is relevant so I can carry out the task that I have been assigned effectively.

I’ve also been developing content creation skills on Canva, and my work has been used on the company's social media accounts.’

What do you most enjoy about your role?

‘Before joining the Group, I worked in the food department of a well-known retailer serving hot food and selling packaged snacks behind a counter, which can be a bit repetitive.

In my current role, I enjoy the variety. There is always something different to do. There's a vast number of many different aspects of the role, and in turn, this leads to minimal repetitive tasks on a daily basis.’

Any advice for someone thinking of joining the Group?

‘The people that I work with have contributed massively to my positive outlook on the company. They have made me feel very welcome and are always available to offer me additional support and work through things with me.

I would recommend being eager to learn and always bringing a positive attitude and mindset to work, particularly if you don’t see your team face to face. Although I work remotely, I connect with the team at the start of every day via a team huddle on a Google video call and then throughout the day on chat and video call as required, so I have loads of virtual contact.’
