Here’s an insight into his experience with Travis Perkins as a Class 2 HGV Driver and some advice for anyone interested in a professional driving career with us but first things first…
What is HGV Class 2?
HGV Class 2 refers to a category of driving license in the United Kingdom that allows individuals to operate a specific type of Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV).
The classification system for HGV licenses is divided into different classes based on the vehicle's weight and characteristics.
- Class 2 licenses are for vehicles with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) exceeding 3,500 kilograms (3.5 tonnes).
- These vehicles are typically medium to large-sized lorries or trucks.

Ian's career journey serves as a remarkable source of inspiration. Initially, he embarked on his professional path by driving a bin lorry. After a year, he made a significant shift, transitioning into the role of a bus driver.
Several years down the line, Ian ventured into a six-month contract at Travis Perkins through an agency, and today, he stands as a highly valued member of our team for over 20 years.
‘My job is great because of the regular hours’
Often, jobs in driving involve unsociable hours and few benefits. With us, that’s just not true. Travis Perkins has strong family values and we encourage all our colleagues to have a good work-life balance.
Across our Group, we offer all our drivers full-time, permanent working hours, with no late nights or overnight stays. This means all our team members have more time to spend with their families.
When he’s not at work, Ian enjoys cycling, watching sports, and eating out. During the time that he is at work, Ian loves interacting and chatting with customers. Meeting new people is just one of the many reasons to drive for a living.
‘When I’m up to date with my work, I pitch in and help the yard staff’
There is a buzzing atmosphere in all our branches because our staff work together as a team. They support each other where they can, sharing the success and good times.
Teamwork is fundamental to the success of our business. Drivers like Derek and Ian also play an important role in our warehouse operations. David, another HGV driver, likes to plan his route so that can spend time with the team at the yard on his break.
‘One of the biggest benefits is knowing I have job security’
