Building a career at BSS: Josh's journey of progression
At the Travis Perkins Group, we place great importance on creating a culture of learning and development. We understand that as you succeed and progress in your career, this contributes directly to the success of our business. That's why we invest in our people.
We spoke to Josh, one of our rising stars at our distribution site on Magna Park in Lutterworth, about his journey with BSS, what he enjoys, what his day looks like, and how he has progressed.
Get to know Josh, a Warehouse Operative
Josh previously worked in the hospitality industry, but the impact of COVID-19 meant he found himself looking for something new, and somewhere he could use his transferable skills.
With Level 2 and 3 qualifications in Electrical Installation, Josh was familiar with the construction industry. So when his friend recommended BSS, he decided to find out more. Having initially joined as a temporary part-time Warehouse Operative, he jumped at the opportunity to become a permanent full-time member of the BSS team.
What does a day look like as a Warehouse Operative?
Every day is different at our BSS distribution site in Magna Park but here are the two main responsibilities of a Warehouse Operative:
- Picking - collecting a large range of plumbing and heating products and fittings from around the warehouse with the aid of material handling equipment (MHE)
- Packing - grouping orders together and loading them into trailers, ready to be delivered to our branch network by drivers overnight.
One of our top priorities is meeting our customer's needs and exceeding their expectations. Being part of the supply chain, distribution and fleet team means you will play a role in delivering to our customers smarter, faster, and as waste free as possible.
Progression at the Travis Perkins Group
Josh has been trained on a range of manual handling equipment, multiple forklift vehicles and HGV shunting, and in November 2022 began an apprenticeship in First Line Management. As an apprentice, Josh has been developing his theoretical and practical skills in managing a team. The best way to learn is often getting stuck in and that’s why we trust all of our apprentices in positions of responsibility.
As a Group, we are committed to providing rewarding career opportunities, whether you want to progress to a managerial role or develop your skill set, there is something for everyone.
Feeling inspired by Josh’s journey?
One of the many reasons Josh loves his role at BSS is the people. For anyone looking to start their career at the Travis Perkins Group, Josh says don’t be afraid to ask for help.
