What is it like to work in our Travis Perkins distribution centre?

As you may have heard, Travis Perkins plc operates five leading businesses across the UK and owns multiple product brands within these businesses. Everything we do and sell is focused on our customers, and we're proud to have helped to build Britain for over 200 years.

We have 4 distribution centres based on Brackmills Industrial Estate in Northampton, and the teams within them play a vital role in the success of our business. We spoke to some of our colleagues who work within our distribution centres, and they told us what it’s like to work there, and why they enjoy their roles.

How Emma adapted to joining from out of sector

Emma’s been with us for almost two and a half years and works as a Warehouse Assistant at Travis Perkins PDH. Previously, she gained experience working in a retail environment and as a carer, but has adapted well after joining from out of sector. Since joining the team, she’s found that she wants to learn all aspects of the job and move around the warehouse.

“I enjoy my job and I feel that I am well looked after by the management team. Despite what people might think working in a warehouse, not everything is heavy and it is manageable. I am content in what I do but I want to learn more, and I feel as though this is a great environment to do so.”

Gytis leads a team to successfully deliver the best service

Gytis has been with our Group for 6 years, and since joining he has progressed his career, became father to two son’s, and is looking forward what the future will bring. He’s been in his current role at the Primary Distribution Hub for 3 years and applied for Distribution Shift Manager because he wanted growth, training and the challenge of working in a fast-paced environment.

“My day-to-day responsibilities include leading a team to successfully deliver the best service for our customers, while keeping safety and wellbeing of our colleagues at the highest priority. I am also nearly at the end of an Improvement Practitioner Apprenticeship Standard (Level 4) involving project management and leadership training which has been very useful.

One of the best aspects of working here is that we have a unique and diverse workforce, which enables us to challenge the norm and look for new ways to build inclusion, which generates new ideas. One of the recent activities we did showed that our colleagues are from 27 different countries!

I really believe we’re better together at Travis Perkins. We have one mission, providing quality service to our customers. The only way we can achieve that, is to work together towards the same goal. All of us might have different responsibilities, but we all contribute.”

How Sheila stepped up to Distribution Shift Manager

Sheila has been with us for over 15 years but was seconded into her current role around a year ago. Having worked in several different roles within the business, as a picker, team leader, supervisor, front-line manager and section leader, Sheila told us applying for the role of Shift Manager felt like a natural progression.

“Day to day I look after the smooth running of the PM Shift. I’m responsible for the Health and Safety of the team and make sure they follow good working practices. Although warehouse jobs have historically been male-dominated environments and in the past, at times I was the only woman on shift, now it is so much more diverse and has changed so much over the years.

I most enjoy interacting with people and trying to help them achieve their goals, just as I have been helped in the past. I enjoy working together with my fellow Shift Leaders to get the job done in a safe and efficient manner. Every day is different and full of different challenges.”

Why Stephen enjoys his role as a Warehouse Assistant

Having previously worked as a Warehouse Operative at a pet care company, Stephen joined us a year ago but has been in his current role for 6 months. He works full-time at Brackmills and says the culture, people, his team, and managers make it a great place to work.

“My role as a Warehouse Assistant requires a hands-on approach to fulfilling customer orders and although the job is physically demanding, I enjoy working as part of a great team and staying active. I take pride in working for one of the best companies in their field.

I definitely feel the company values resonate with my work, particularly ‘We Care’. Health and safety are held to a high standard, and we genuinely care about each other and our customers, plus management supports us when needed. I’m looking forward to starting the Sharesave scheme, developing my skills further, and maybe getting a license for one of the different types of trucks we use on-site.”
