Amber, a driver at Travis Perkins Fort William, celebrates returning to work as a new mum
Amber has been with us for two and a half years as a driver in our Fort William branch in Scotland. She became a mum for the first time in February 2022, so she shared with us how it has been returning to work, and what it’s like to work at Travis Perkins.
“I decided to go for the driver role and haven’t looked back”
Amber grew up on a farm and drove tractors as soon as she was old enough. “It’s very rural here so career opportunities can be limited. I studied farming and went on to become a dairy farmer and then a fish farmer. I first heard about the Travis Perkins driver role through Ali, one of our other drivers at Fort William. I decided to go for it and have never looked back.”
Valuable keeping-in-touch days during maternity leave
Amber joined us just six weeks before the pandemic hit. “It was my first driving job and I loved it from the start. The Keeping in Touch (KIT) days have been really helpful during my maternity leave and it’s reassuring to know how everything comes back to me. It’s great to see everyone and it’s always good to drive in this part of Scotland when the weather is nice.”
Policies and values that matter when you need them
Our Group family-leave policies have made a real difference to Amber and her family, enabling her to spend more time with her baby whilst she’s still very young. “I’ve felt so much more relaxed knowing I had an income. Having my daughter and watching her grow has been very special, and I’ve been able to enjoy it without stress and worry. There are lots of women who only have six weeks paid maternity - that can bring a lot of pressure to return to work early.”
In a nutshell, our family policies include:
- Maternity: 26 weeks’ full pay, followed by 13 weeks’ statutory
- Adoption/surrogacy: 26 weeks’ full pay, followed by 13 weeks’ statutory
- Paternity: two weeks’ full pay
- IVF support: two days’ paid leave per IVF cycle
- Miscarriage: two weeks’ fully paid leave for affected females, two days full paid leave for affected males
- Five days of additional annual leave for both new mothers and fathers for the two years following the child’s birth
Flexibility when you need it most
Amber has returned to work one day a week initially since November. “My branch Manager has been so flexible - there’s been no pressure at all. We’re a close team and like family. Everyone has always been so supportive and two of my colleagues even nominated me for last year’s Driver of the Year in which I was a runner-up. I’ll get to spend most of my time with my daughter while I’m going back to the job I love - it’s perfect.”
