Apprenticeship spotlight: Anthony Carter

For us Apprentices are the future of our business. They’re not only our future pipeline of specialists, but also current colleagues developing themselves even further on programmes within the business. We love to shine a spotlight on our wonderful apprentices learning, earning and working on our array of 38 programmes across the Travis Perkins Group. We spoke to Anthony who completed an Operations Compliance Support at BSS - Level 5 Management Apprenticeship.

1. What first attracted you to the programme?

It was definitely the opportunity to develop my leadership and management skills, to continue to grow within my role with the view to stepping forward in the near future. I also enjoyed the flexibility to do a higher level course whilst working, and not having to take a career break to continue my personal development. Having already done a Level 3 with the business, I had a good understanding of how the programme worked into my day to day work balance.

2. How have you been supported throughout the programme and beyond?

Between my Line Manager and Coach, I have had great levels of support. From having the understanding from my Coach around workload and flexible deadlines (due to an injury which took me out of work for some time), to their guidance and support around modules to ensure standards are hit. They’ve helped me achieve the best I can.

My Line Manager has also provided great support, giving me some time during the work week to focus on my workload, as well as providing me with plenty of development opportunities within the role to grow and apply new skills.

3. What’s your favourite thing about being on an Apprenticeship programme with the TP Group?

Being able to learn new skills and develop professionally and personally whilst continuing to work in a role I enjoy.

4. How has the programme set you up for success?

It has provided me with a great opportunity to develop new skills and reflect on my own journey throughout the business, and develop on both a personal and professional level. I feel that in the past 12 months, I have learnt a lot about myself. More than just business skills, I’ve also gained a deeper understanding of emotional intelligence, the way my own mindset can impact others and also how to better manage my own emotions within the workplace.

5. What has been your proudest moment since working with the Travis Perkins Group?

My proudest moment was becoming a part of the Operational Compliance Team, partly because of their success within the CCF / BSS / Keyline businesses, but also because it provides me with such a great development and networking opportunity. This is a highly respected team across those businesses, and garner high praise from both the branch network and senior management. Being able to be a part of this team and help continue to grow and improve that relationship, is something I am very proud of.

6. Do you have any advice for someone thinking of enrolling on an apprenticeship?

Don’t be afraid and just go for it! It can be a daunting prospect to pick up a course on top of the day job, but the skills and experience you gain from it will be invaluable. As I mentioned above, I joined the business originally through the L3 management Apprenticeship about 7 years ago, and it provided me with such a great base to launch my career from. The course I’m doing now really helps put all of that experience to further use, continues to develop my skills and helps propel me towards the roles I desire in the future.
